How to be a great mother

I read a rather cute story the other day about a young fellow that went to the lingerie section of a department store to buy a gift for his mother–a slip. He was planning to give it to her as a gift. Gutsy move on his part. When I was young I avoided such sections of department stores at all cost! Still try to avoid them if at all possible :-).

Anyway, this little boy told the department store clerk that he had no idea what size to buy. The clerk asked, “Is she tall or short, fat or skinny?” The little boy interrupted the clerk and said, “She’s just perfect!”

So the lingerie clerk wrapped up a size 34 slip and gave it to the little man.

Two days later, his mother went to the department store with slip in hand and exchanged it for a size 52.

Someone has said that the sweetest word in the English language is the word “mother.” But, what makes a mother so sweet?

They’re hard workers. The proverbs writer says that they sew, shop, cook, garden, and often burns the candle at both ends (Pro. 31:13-27).

They’re helpful advice givers. Again, the proverbs writer says, “She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness” (Pro. 31:26).

They’re happiness creators. That’s right. They are what often makes a home a happy one. A husband wrote on his wife’s tombstone, after 60 years of marriage, “She always made home happy.”

We’re soon approaching the day where sons and daughters pause to honor mothers with perishable gifts. Take some advice from someone who won’t be able to do that this year. Take today and everyday to honor her with your life. For you see, your example and influence is something that never fades away.

“Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth” (Eph. 6:2,3).

I hope you have a terrific Thursday!
